PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV: GREECE AND BULGARIA BECOME A MAJOR ENERGY HUB AND WE CONTRIBUTE TO THE ENERGY DIVERSIFICATION OF THE REGION

24.08.2020

Today we provide an opportunity for gas supplies to us from all over the world. Greece and Bulgaria become a major energy hub and we contribute to the energy diversification of the region. This is what Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said at the ceremony in Athens where an agreement was signed between Bulgastransgaz EAD and Gastrade S. A. on the purchase and sale of shares for the LNG terminal near Alexandroupolis. “With the investment that we have made in Bulgaria, with the exceptional support of the EU and of the Commission, through peace, dialog, friendship and strategic cooperation with our colleagues from Greece, today we are acquiring shares in the terminal”, the Prime Minister stressed. Mr. Borissov said further that the construction of the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) goes at full speed too.   “In theory, I have heard a lot about diversification; today it materializes”, the Prime Minister underlined and added that the availability of a real energy market is good for the economy, the households and the European Green Deal.

“Gas streams flowed from East to West and from North to South via compressor stations that pushed liquefied gas in one direction only. We have made a solid investment in Bulgaria and redirected the reverses”, Mr. Borissov pointed out. “It is always difficult to shift into reverse as it causes unrests, revolutions and grunts and alongside Bulgaria joined the Banking Union, the ERM2, therefore Greek companies and investors may rest assured of the absolute safety of their investment in the future”, the Prime Minister said further. Prime Minister Boyko Borissov specially appreciated the efforts of the energy projects workers.

Prime Ministers Borissov and Mitsotakis attended the ceremony where Mr. Vladimir Malinov, Executive Director of Bulgartransgaz EAD, signed the agreement on the purchase and sale of Gastrade S.A. shares with the majority shareholder Mrs. Asimina-Eleni Kopelouzou. Another agreement was signed between the special purpose vehicle Gastrade S.A., Bulgartransgaz and the other shareholders – the Greek state-owned company DEPA Commercial S.А. and Gaslog Cyprus Investments Ltd., which is one of the major international companies owing LNG carriers.

The finalized documents are the final stage of the process making Bulgartransgaz EAD an equal shareholder in the LNG terminal project implementing the cabinet decision of January 2020 and the preliminary agreement on the purchase and sale of 20% of the Gastrade S.A. capital.

Bulgarian Energy Minister Temenuzhka Petkova and Greek Environment and Energy Minister Kostis Hatzidakis attended the ceremony in Athens.
