Bulgaria and the United States of America engage in fruitful cooperation in joint projects of mutual interest that will contribute to the achievement of energy security. Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev and US Ambassador to Bulgaria Kenneth Merten agreed on that at their meeting in the Prime Minister’s Office. They underlined each other’s satisfaction with the results achieved in the energy sector and in gas diversification in particular. Prominence was given to Bulgaria’s impressive steps undertaken in this course of action. Cooperation between the two countries strengthens energy security and is conducive to the diversification of the sources and routes of supplies not just in Bulgaria but in the region alike.
Prime Glavchev expressed his confidence that the partnership with the United States in the nuclear energy sector would continue as well. In the course of the discussion, it was noted that the construction of Unit 7 and Unit 8 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is among the key priorities of this government. It is a project of strategic importance for the energy security of Bulgaria and the region and for the achievement of the decarbonization goals.
The meeting discussed, inter alia, the progress of the expansion of the Chiren Underground Gas Storage (UGS) facility. It was emphasized that the twofold increase of the natural gas storage capacity is of strategic importance for the energy security, diversification and development of the gas market in the region.
The day before Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Lyudmila Petkova and Minister of Energy Vladimir Malinov had a meeting with the Ambassador of the United States of America Kenneth Merten.
