Bulgaria’s new European Commissioner to be elected

08.06.2023

In the coming days the European Commission (EC) will officially ask Bulgaria to nominate its new member of the Commission. This was reported following a telephone communication between Prime Minister Acad. Nikolai Denkov and the EC President Ursula von der Leyen.

The Prime Minister thanked Mrs. Ursula von der Leyen for the congratulations on the election of the new government. She was the first world politician to post on Twitter to wish success to him and the Deputy Prime Minister Mariya Gabriel in the performance of their new duties in Bulgarian politics.

Acad. Nikolai Denkov briefed the EC President about the priorities of the new cabinet: the drawing up of the budgets for this year and next year, Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen Area and to the Eurozone and all changes in the legislation and reforms as related to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

The President of the Commission emphasized the importance of the defense of the European Union’s external borders and reiterated that Bulgaria would receive 45 million Euro to reinforce the border guard.

The two leaders are planning to meet in person and the meeting will most likely take place in Brussels before the European Council meeting scheduled for 29-30 June 2023.
