PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV MET WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE THOMAS BACH

14.09.2018

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov met with the President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach.

During the conversation, Bulgarian Prime Minister Borissov highlighted that our country pursues a committed and consistent sport development policy and takes pride in its strong athletes in a number of disciplines. “Before 1990, all the countries in the region were mostly advertised through sport, but then there came devastation. The few sports halls in Bulgaria were privatized. There were none in the capital or in the city of Stefka Kostadinova - Plovdiv. We have invested 350 million BGN and started building one after another sports hall throughout the country. Today we have the “Arena Armeec”, the “Kolodruma” in Plovdiv - the largest in Europe, and many others,” the Prime Minister said. Prime Minister Borissov defined as exceptionally positive the interest of a number of significant international figures in the three world championships hosted in Bulgaria, as well as their feedback on the good organization. “Hosting those championships comes in recognition of what has been done in terms of material base in the country. I thank the Bulgarian athletes, who value the state investment and set an example for the next generations,” the Prime Minister stressed.

"Thank you for investing in sports and the future of the young. We have been following these processes. We enjoy great cooperation that will continue. Europe and the world have become witness of the progress of Bulgaria in recent years. This was particularly proven by your successful European Presidency,” said Thomas Bach. He underlined that hosting the three world championships in Bulgaria - in rhythmic gymnastics, rowing, and volleyball - show the high class of Bulgaria in sports.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Youth and Sports Krasen Kralev, the Bulgarian Olympic Committee Chairperson Stefka Kostadinova, Bulgarian Olympic Committee Secretary General Belcho Goranov and Deputy Chairpersons Valentin Yordanov, Krassimir Ininski, and Lyubomir Ganev, as well as Prof. Pencho Geshev, Rector of the National Sports Academy.

During his visit, the International Olympic President will attend the world championships in rhythmic gymnastics in Sofia and in rowing in Plovdiv.
