PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV MET WITH OECD SECRETARY GENERAL ANGEL GURIA

25.09.2018

Bulgaria will maximize its preparations for membership in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and we hope to receive a specific date for the start of the accession negotiations with the Organization as soon as possible. This was stated by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov at his meeting with the Secretary General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Angel Gurria. In follow up to their talks from April this year in Sofia, the Bulgarian Prime Minister welcomed the Secretary General's efforts to reach a consensus on OECD enlargement and expressed his expectation that our country's efforts in the course of its preparations for membership will be taken fully into account.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov pointed out that since 2007, when Bulgaria officially applied for membership in the OECD, a number of actions have been taken that clearly indicate the serious intentions to realize this foreign policy priority. The Prime Minister reminded that at the end of last year the Bulgarian government decided to establish a permanent interdepartmental coordination mechanism and approved a "roadmap" for our country's accession to the OECD. Borissov pointed out our active participation in the work of some of the main bodies of the Organization, as well as the fact that we have joined a number of its legal instruments.

During the talks, Prime Minister Borissov focused on the economic policy of the Bulgarian government. He noted the efforts for sustainable development, financial stability, and raising the living standard for the citizens, as well as contributing to the expansion of international trade on a multilateral and non-discriminatory basis.

Angel Gurria voiced support for the Bulgarian OECD application and congratulated Bulgaria on its achievements so far in its preparations for the accession negotiations. According to him, the adoption of a "roadmap", which includes measures for speeding up the preparations, is a good step.

At the end of the meeting, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov pointed out that any positive sign by the OECD towards Bulgaria would also be a strong signal for countries from the neighbouring regions about the Organization's willingness to share its good practices and to take notice of their successes in meeting the high OECD standards.
