PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV MET WITH LIBYAN PRIME MINISTER FAYEZ AL-SARRAJ

15.02.2019

"I am glad to greet you, you know how important our relationship with Libya is. Great traditions and relationships. Now I hope you visit us in Sofia and that we will restore the previous good relations." Thus Prime Minister Boyko Borissov began his bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of the State of Libya Fayez al-Sarraj, which was held in Munich. The two Prime Ministers are among the world leaders participating in the traditional security conference in the Bavarian city.

"It is really an exceptional pleasure to meet with you, Mr. Prime Minister. We have had very good traditional relations for decades. Regardless of the circumstance we have been facing recently - in political and other aspects, we have a desire to work with Bulgaria precisely on restoring these good relations,” said the Prime Minister of Lybia.

The two Prime Ministers shared the opinion that the exchange of high-level visits between Bulgaria and Libya will undoubtedly identify concrete steps to enhance the bilateral cooperation in all areas of mutual interest. Areas of such importance include healthcare, education, commerce, and business.

Prime Minister Borissov pointed out that as a member of the European Union, Bulgaria shares the view of the importance of cooperation with the countries of North Africa for finding sustainable solutions to the problems of illegal migration, extremist ideology, and terrorism.

Prime Ministers Borissov and Sarraj also discussed the detention of the Badr / Bdin motor tanks. "The case is a private legal matter, however, the Bulgarian government has committed to it so as to prevent any adverse impact on bilateral relations. We are ready to resolve the issue in a mutually agreeable manner”, said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov. He added that the ship is in the port of Burgas and will remain there until the situation is finally clarified.

"The principle of separation of powers is in place in Bulgaria and all the actions of the Bulgarian administration so far are based on acts of the judiciary. The Libyan side, through its procedural representatives, has the opportunity to defend its legal rights and interests before the independent Bulgarian court,” said Prime Minister Borissov. He added that lawyers on the Libyan side should submit all relevant documents to the judicial authorities for a final settlement of the disputed aspects. And the representatives of the Bulgarian administration will comply with the enforced court decisions in accordance with the principle of legality that they are guided by.

“To prevent the slightest shadow of doubt over the actions of the Bulgarian state on the issue, all the competent bodies of the executive power scrutinize the case for possible illegal actions," Prime Minister Borissov said. His Libyan counterpart said he would define the actions of the Bulgarian authorities on the case as good news.
