PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV IN SARAJEVO: THE WESTERN BALKANS REMAIN A EU PRIORITY, BUT THE COUNTRIES FROM THE REGION MUST OVERCOME THEIR DIFFERENCES

05.07.2018

Austria has taken on the idea of the European perspective for the countries of the Western Balkans and will keep this priority during its Presidency, but the countries from the region have to overcome their differences. This was said by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov after the meeting with the Chairman of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Council of Ministers Dennis Zvizdic. "We can rest assured that in the next six months the process related to the European perspective of the Western Balkans will move forward," Borissov said, thereby highlighting the importance of infrastructure, transport, and digital connectivity projects.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister gave examples for resolved differences - the agreement signed between Sofia and Skopje last year and the one signed between Skopje and Athens a month ago. "This is why Bosnia and Herzegovina should learn and follow these examples - to find a solution to its internal conflicts. These decisions were not easy for Bulgaria, for Greece, or for the Republic of Macedonia, but they have provided a perspective," Borissov underlined.

"I would like in particular to thank for everything that Bulgaria has been doing for us in the last 20 years and especially in the last 6 months," said the Chairman of Bosnia and Herzegovina's Council of Ministers Denis Zvizdic. He noted that the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU managed to put and keep the focus on the region of the Western Balkans within the European agenda. "This is extremely important for us, because the European perspective is among our main goals," Zvizdic explained.

The Chairman of the Council of Ministers also said that the two countries will continue to work for the economic development and connectivity in the region, as well as for security and the fight against extremism.
