PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV: BULGARIA FULLY SUPPORTS GEORGIA'S EUROPEAN AND EURO-ATLANTIC PERSPECTIVE

24.09.2018

Bulgaria is one of the most active supporters of Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic perspective, and we will continue to provide consistent support to Georgia in the process of political association and economic integration with the European Union. With these words, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov turned to Georgia's Prime Minister Mamuk Bakhtadze. They held a bilateral meeting in New York, where a Bulgarian delegation led by Prime Minister Borissov will participate in the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In the context of the declared Bulgarian support for Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic prospects, Prime Minister Borissov noted that our country highly appreciates Georgia's work with the EU to ensure security in the Black Sea region. "We confirm our interest in further intensive cooperation with Georgia on defense, both on a bilateral basis and on the realization of the NATO-Georgia Package," the Bulgarian Prime Minister underlined.

In front of his Georgian counterpart, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov expressed his satisfaction with the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries and highlighted that Georgia is among the main foreign policy partners of Bulgaria in the Black Sea and Southern Caucasus region. "Economic relations between the two countries in recent years are characterized by high levels of trade volume, but there is also unrealized economic potential. For us, the implementation of the Georgia-EU Agreement for a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area provides a new framework and opportunity to develop the export potential of both countries," said Boyko Borissov.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Borissov announced that Bulgaria is interested in deepening cooperation in the context of infrastructure links between Europe and Asia, especially in the implementation of projects of mutual interest in the field of energy and transport. "Bulgarian companies have an interest and could successfully participate in the implementation of individual activities under Georgian priority projects," said Borissov.

According to Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, the growing importance of Georgia and Bulgaria for the development of the transit corridors between Asia and Europe determines the priority position of the transport sector in bilateral cooperation. "The Bulgarian government has an interest in the development of maritime transport between the two countries. We will continue to participate actively in the consultations on the development of the new multimodal transport corridor 'Persian Gulf-Black Sea' from Iran to Bulgaria and Greece, as well as on the development of the Trans-Caspian international transport route - via Varna and Burgas to Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and China, or the so-called 'New Silk Road'," he explained.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov noted that Georgia is a strategic partner for the EU in terms of enhancing security of energy supply, diversification of routes and sources of gas supply to Europe and Bulgaria. "Bulgaria has a strong interest in the construction of the Southern Gas Corridor," Borissov said.
