PRIME MINISTER BOYKO BORISSOV: COHESION POLICY CONTRIBUTES TO CONNECTIVITY IN EUROPE

08.06.2018

All improvements we have done in the recent 20 years have been accomplished within EU Cohesion Policy programs and amount to more than 20 billion BGN. Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said at the high-level conference on EU Cohesion Policy - "Prospects for Convergence and Sustainable Regions after 2020" that took place at the National Palace of Culture. The event is part of the calendar of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU in the Cohesion sector and is the first public discussion of the proposal for the new Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) of the EU 2021-2027.

Borissov stressed the importance of the Cohesion Policy for connectivity in the EU and added that cohesion is what can bring closer together regions and policies in the community. He stressed that, at the same time, discussion on cohesion, like the issue of migration, has been a cause of differences in Member States' positions. "Everyone wants to solve their domestic problems and to say at home that they won, that they have achieved the best result for the country," the Prime Minister said.

Borissov defined as troubling the fact that Turkey has revoked the migrant readmission agreement with Greece. He pointed out that our country strictly fulfills its responsibilities as an external Schengen border of the EU, that there is zero migration pressure on the border and the agreement between Bulgaria and Turkey works effectively. The Prime Minister reiterated the Bulgarian position on the issue of migratory pressure - "All European countries must do as we have done - close the borders and make passage possible only through border check-points. At the same time, those countries that are in the center of Europe and have no external borders should financially support the efforts of countries like Italy, Spain, Greece,” the Bulgarian Prime Minister said.
