Prime Minister Boyko Borissov discussed the transport links between Bulgaria and Greece with the Minister of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks Christos Spirtzis. The focus of the talks was on the development of the Thessaloniki-Kavala-Alexandroupolis-Burgas-Varna-Ruse railway connection.
The Bulgarian Prime Minister is on a visit in Greece, where he is attending the Third Thessaloniki Summit, which is dedicated to the European perspective, connectivity, industrial development and cooperation with the Western Balkans this year.
"Bulgaria and Greece have always had excellent relations, over the years our countries have cooperated actively in the field of transport and this foundation that we already have as a starting point will be upgraded," Prime Minister Borissov told the Greek transport minister. The Prime Minister stressed that the Thessaloniki-Kavala-Alexandroupolis-Bourgas-Varna-Ruse railway requires hard work and pointed out that its implementation would further contribute to the economic growth in the region. The project aims to develope a sustainable double railway axis, an electrified railway corridor with a modern ERTMS rail traffic management system linking Bulgarian and Greek ports. The construction of the railway is part of the larger project for a multimodal freight corridor connecting the Aegean and Black Sea Sea2Sea.
The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Rosen Zhelyazkov. Further possibilities for the subsequent development of the transport corridor were discussed - the construction of a motorway or a highway between Alexandroupolis and Bourgas, as well as the extension of the Thessaloniki corridor to the Patras Port so as to create the possibility for connection by sea to Italy and Spain.
